Susin Nielsen is the award-winning author of seven young adult novels. She got her start feeding cast and crew on the popular television series, Degrassi Junior High. They hated her food, but they saw a spark in her writing. Nielsen went on to pen sixteen episodes of the hit TV show and has written for over 20 Canadian TV series.
Her first young adult novel, Word Nerd, was published in 2008. It won multiple Young Readers’ Choice Awards, as did her second novel, Dear George Clooney: Please Marry My Mom. Her third novel, The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larsen, won the Governor General’s Literary Award, the Canadian Library Association’s Children’s Book of the Year Award and the UK Literacy Award. Rolling Stone magazine put it at #27 in their list of “Top 40 Best YA Novels.” We Are All Made of Molecules, published in 2015, won the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Award and was longlisted for UK’s Carnegie Medal and nominated for the Governor General’s Literary Award. No Fixed Address won the IODE Violet Downey Award and the Sheila A. Egoff award, and was also nominated for the Carnegie Medal. Her latest novel, Tremendous Things, was recently published to critical acclaim.
In 2019 Nielsen was honoured with the Vicki Metcalf Award for a body of work at the Writers’ Trust Awards. Her books have been translated around the world. She lives in Vancouver with her family and two naughty cats, and is currently showrunning a new TV series she created, called Family Law.
Getting to Know You
In my case it was the reverse. I found a copy of “Go Ask Alice” by Anonymous in my school library in sixth grade. I read it with great fascination. But my mom discovered the book, and next thing I knew, it disappeared … I do remember I’d already read to the end, however. The book never made a re-appearance on our library shelves, and my mom does not remember this story, but I’m pretty sure my very liberal mother got a book banned!

Kind of a combo. As a project wears on, things get messier. 
Well, as I get older my thoughts have become much more existential, so I won’t answer this one as it might be too dark.
I would love to see one of my books get made into a musical, and I’d love to participate in writing the book, and maybe even dabble in writing some song lyrics (with someone who knew what they were doing!)
